Mobility Fund
Up to £25,000 to support knowledge exchange, develop specific innovation skills and progress medical technologies, by enabling short-term relocation of staff within the UK.
The Tay Health Tech ‘Collaborative Fund’ is now open for applications!
As part of this, the Mobility fund is for up to £25,000 per application and available for up to 12 months activity. We expect to fund up to four opportunities. This will be a rolling call, open until the fund is fully allocated.

The Mobility Fund is available to meet a need for an individual to work on an innovation project with the aim to accelerate the translation of a medtech product towards market launch. This could fund the relocation of a member of staff and/or funding the costs of spending time with another department or organisation.
Scope
- To support knowledge exchange between and within sectors, including academia, health and social care, further education, civic bodies, NHS, Tay Health Tech partners and beyond.
- To broaden the knowledge base to learn from other areas of the UK with respect to the challenges of health inequalities and community healthcare in Tayside.
- Short-term relocation of staff into a different organisation or department.
- To develop specific innovation and translational skills between partners.
- To progress technologies arising from research towards commercialisation and clinical application by seconding into a new department or organisation.
Eligibility
- For new projects: kick start the idea, create the evidence for follow-on stages, build the team.
- For existing projects: expand on an existing device or project that moves into a new usage or product development that requires new partners, skills, knowledge and input.
- Academia: integration of new partners into ongoing projects or existing partners into new departments or organisations, to gain additional skills and knowledge into a product’s development.
- Partners can include higher education, further education, industry, civic bodies, health and social care organisations (including PHS, NSS, NES, SAS, NHS24 etc) and third sector organisations.
Eligible Costs
- Salary costs for academic research non-tenured staff, i.e. Directly Incurred (100%).
- NHS Tayside salary costs for sessions dedicated to the project, or backfill (100%).
- Travel, accommodation and subsistence (which must be booked and spent in line with your organisation’s policies) (100%).
- Consumables.
- Hot-desking fees.
- Training costs.
- Reasonable costs associated with EDI considerations, such as travelling with family.
Both parties must assess the funding with respect to Minimum Financial Assistance and the Subsidy Control Act. The parties must enter into an agreement covering ownership of IPR and management of commercialisation.
Ineligible costs
- Academic member of staff salary, NHS Consultant salary (i.e. Directly Allocated)
- External partner (company) salaries
- Overhead costs
- New, fundamental research
- Academic publication costs
- Conference fees
- IP and patent costs, including but not limited to registering, maintaining and supporting patents and property rights
- PhD or studentship funding
- Standard desktop computing
- Contributions to KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnerships) projects
- Contributions towards the cost of purchasing equipment with a value over £10,000.
Application Review
Eligible applications will be reviewed by the Tay Health Tech team, with recommendations made to the Tay Health Tech Steering Board for final decision making. Applications will be reviewed on:
- Impact on Tayside including economic
- Tayside’s healthcare need (including the care pathway)
- Quality of any Patient & Public Involvement & Engagement (PPIE) plan, where necessary
- Value for money
