Tay Health Tech wants to make healthcare accessible to everyone in Tayside, to improve patient outcomes. We’re do this by creating research environments where innovation and collaboration can thrive. We’re supporting the development and commercialisation of cutting-edge technologies, so that high-quality care is available to all.

Tay Health Tech is supported by a diverse consortium of leading organisations, including: the University of Dundee, Heriot-Watt University, University of Glasgow, University of St Andrews, Edinburgh Napier University, NHS Tayside, Scottish Enterprise, UKRI, InnoScot Health, Dundee City Council, Dundee and Angus College, SHARE, BioDundee, and Angus Council.

We’re listening to the lived expertise of patients, carers and health and social care practitioners to shape our priorities. We’re funding researchers to realise their medical technologies in community environments. This will shift healthcare away from hospital settings and help as much as possible to keep people at home.

Why we do it

The National Health Service in Scotland is seeing an increase in patient numbers. This is alongside a decreasing number of GPs and GP practices, and a decreasing real-terms budget. The population is living longer, but also living unwell for longer.

Tayside presents a diversity of rural and urban populations, across a large area. This disparity presents challenges to accessing healthcare facilities which are often centralised. Life expectancy varies by over 14 years across the Tayside region. The proportion of the public using the NHS as their sole healthcare provider is the highest in the UK, at 93%. Within NHS Tayside are GP practices, community hospitals, and two large hospitals. This includes Ninewells in Dundee, one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe. Tayside therefore not only has a wide range of challenges, but also offers a vast array of opportunities.
